Wrapping by Numbers: The Doodle Mustang

Full print wraps are a popular way to create a truly custom vehicle design. Films like MPI 1105™ put unlimited possibilities on the table. When Chris Martinez of San Andreas Customs was challenged to make a one of one design for a customer, he chose to go in a different direction.

Inspired by the work of world-renowned artist Mr. Doodle, Martinez and his client, Cade Leatherman, decided to go above and beyond a simple color change or a printed wrap. The result was a collection of characters made from cut Supreme Wrapping™ Film.

“We went for personal touches to make this wrap unique, like Cade’s miniature ponies,” said Martinez. “After we saw that cutting out each image for the wrap would be better for dramatic effect, I decided to do the whole thing that way.”

This unorthodox approach paid off, creating a striking contrast between the Satin Black vinyl and the gloss white factory paint on Leatherman’s Mustang Shelby GT500. Martinez is particularly proud of the mini donkey on the driver’s side, a cartoon of Leatherman’s donkey named Sassy Taco. People line up to take pictures with the wrap, but they especially love Sassy Taco.

“Everyone loves this car when they see it,” said Martinez. “This was the first wrap of its kind that I’ve done, and it was worth it to go out of my comfort zone.”

Martinez has years of experience working with Avery Dennison films, and decided that it would be the right film for this challenging of a project due to its repositionability and finish. Aside from the technical challenge, Martinez wanted to make something impressive for Leatherman, who has been a longtime customer.
